Job Opportunities
We're always pleased to hear from individuals who may be interested in working aboard Chalice, and we do have some opportunities in 2007. The following is an honest appraisal of what is on offer and expected!
Crew
You must be physically fit, have some experience of working on boats and be a non-smoker. Your duties will include assisting the cook in the preparation and serving of meals, daily cleaning of the bathrooms and other general housekeeping duties including washing dishes.
You will also be expected to assist the skipper with the general running of the boat (which will include some deckwork) and help to maintain a clean, safe and comfortable environment for the guests.
Cooks
Although we have a number of excellent cooks who sail with us on a regular basis, we'd still like to hear from you as there are always opportunities arising on Chalice and other boats too.
You must be able to work in a compact galley and should have some experience of working on boats and hold a current Food Hygeine certificate. You would be cooking for up to sixteen persons, providing a full cooked breakfast, lunch and a three-course dinner, supplemented with fresh baking. It is essential that you can easily cater for people with specific dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, ceoliac etc) offering alternatives to the set menu. You would be responsible for preparing a varied and appetising menu and buying the
necessary supplies within a budget. You must be able to work as part of a small team and would be assisted where necessary by the crewmember. You must be a non-smoker.
Guides
If you have a specific interest in birds, cetaceans, natural history and the outdoors in general, you may have what it takes to be a great guide. You will be the extra eyes and ears for our guests, willing and able to point out and identify bird life, marine life and prominent natural features of the Hebrides. You would be expected to lead short walks on land, assisting guests where necessary. You would also be required to assist the skipper and crew with more general procedures associated with the day-to-day running of the boat. There can be no substitute for enthusiasm in this role.
Before you dash off and apply for any of these posts, you need to read the following (this is the small print!):
Working on Chalice can be very demanding at times. Our main purpose is to offer all of our guests a first-class holiday experience regardless of weather or our mood on a particular day. However, if we can't enjoy doing this ourselves and have some FUN, then I can't see the point in doing it at all. So we need to understand what's required from each one of us. If you're not used to hard work, if you can't see the point in routines or the necessity of having to do what you may think are menial tasks, if you resent being told what to do at times - then this job is not for you. However, if you understand the basics of customer service, get on well with people and have a sense of humour, and want to travel in good company in the most fantastic surroundings in Europe, well, you shouldn't be disappointed.
You will be working as part of a close-knit and dedicated team and expected to be able to 'go the extra mile' when necessary. You will, of course, be able to enjoy the scenery and wildlife as we travel and go ashore with guests at most locations. You will be working on a self-employed basis and although the pay is not brilliant, the opportunities are endless.
OK - so if you've read the small print and you think you've got what it takes, why not send us an email and tell us a little bit about yourself- just click here Please do not use the 'contact us' link or we will not reply. Thank you.
